Post 4: Music and Food

AWESOME stock issues, you guys are funny! Did you catch the Grammy's? Who'd you like, what was weird, who annoyed you, who IS Dolly Parton???? Make a bold claim about the show, a performance or the world of music in general, your fave or least fave artist, ect--then support this claim with relevent evidence. What does any of this have to do with food: Nothing. Why is food in the title of the blog? I don't know. Maybe I am hungry....

I did not catch the grammys, so here is my bold statement about music in general:
Katy Perry and Hannah Montana sound exactly the same. I know this will probably offend some music fans since Katy Perry seems to be very popular among 20-somethings lately, while Hannah Montana is popular among people ages 6 through 12. However, the similarity between the two is undeniable. I challenge any one who disagrees to listen to a Katy Perry song and a Hannah Montana song back to back. You will find that three things are true of both "artists": their melodies are extremely generic, thier voices are obnixious, their lyrics are meaningless. This brings me to my next bold claim: Neither of these broads deserves any air time on the radio!

My favorite performance was Gwyneth Paltrow and Cee Lo Green singing "Forget You", as the muppets as backup singers was nice touch. Least favorite peformance was Mick Jagger, probably because I don't really care for his music; The Grammy's showed that desptie hit songs and popularity, it won't necessarily guarantee you an award ( both Justin Bieber and Katy Perry won nothing). I believe that the bank Cake is the most underrated band today.
Many bands today follow a formula (Intro-Verse-chorus-augmented intro-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-outro). The entire band will also follow the same chord structure (often 1-5-6-4). these bands rarely offer anything significant to the art known as music. Cake does not do this on a regular basis.
If I were to compare Cake to any other band, it would be the Beatles. The Beatles were more groudbreaking (given their era), but like Cake, there is more than one melody going on at one time and the lyrics were cleverly written and engaging. Both bands wrote songs just for fun (Race Car Ya-Yas and Her Majesty), and both bands wrote songs that challenge your perspective.
If you like Nickelback or bands like that, I really hope you enjoy them. But you have to know that their contribution to the art has been nil at most. Take some time, sit back and listen to Cake.

With today's music, I believe that music artists are very talented. But I think that people come to conclusions that some artists are sellouts and just make songs to make money. While that may be half true, I think that the source of the problem is mainly the music production company. Music companies make there singers go where they want to be so they can make money without the freedom of allowing pure music. My claim: Music artists are not to be completely blamed for below average music; its the music company as well.

I love watching award shows, seeing woman in beautiful dresses, guys in tuxes and performances that are amazing always catches my attention. I loved that at the Grammys Mumford and Sons performed "The Cave". I've been in love with Mumford and Sons for 3 years and although this past year they have gotten more popular it was refreshing to see a band with genuine talent who doesn't have a huge hit on 107.9 be asked to perform. But I will make a claim for music, people often complain about "Sell out artists" who all sound the same but that music isn't horrible according to Mill's market place theory people choose what is consumed in media therefore they choose what the media produces, if this music wasn't liked it would not sell therefore it would not be produced, if we don't like hearing Miley Cyrus the number one way to stop having the music industry promote artists like her is to stop listening to her. Change your radio station if it bothers you that much.

While I did not catch the Grammy's this year, I've noticed a lot of uproar about the winner of album of the year: Arcade Fire. Arcade Fire are widely considered an "indie" band, and have received little recognition for their work. Artists like Eminem and Kanye West immediately posted their outrage to Twitter, and the general consensus seemed to be: "Who the hell is Arcade Fire?" Even actors and actresses such as Rosie O'Donnell were posting on Twitter about the band's win. However, I know who Arcade Fire is, and I happen to like their music. I know a lot of people who know who Arcade Fire is, who happen to like their music. But regardless of whether or not you enjoy listening to them, their music is certainly a few steps up from the generic, carbon-copy stylings of most musical artists out there today. Therefore, my bold statement is this: Before you react so negatively to Arcade Fire's win, consider how hard they must have worked to overcome their "underdog" status, especially considering the added pressure of writing your own songs, playing your own music/instruments, and no auto-tuning.

I did not watch the grammys, but I would like to make a claim for music in general. Some people are really crazy about their favorite artists. I was listening to NPR the other day and one of the reports was about how Justin Biber fans smeared Esperanza Spalding's. After the upset of a fairly unfamiliar artist winning the award of Best New Artist, young Bieber fanatics took to Wikipedia with racially charged comments. Liking an artist is one thing, but there's a point where some fans cross a line into being just plain crazy. Same with Arcade Fire taking Album of the Year. Some people were very upset that their favorite artist lost to a not so mainstream indie band. Which even lead to a blog http://whoisarcadefire.tumblr.com/ that posted people's angry reactions from twitter and facebook. Most of the reactions are people saying "...should have won the award" or "so and so is a much better artist than Arcade Fire." People get very emotional for their artists and even angry when their favorite artist does not win an award. Fans of artists seem to be as emotional as fans of sports teams. And award shows are like the World Cup for musicians. Except the taunts and cheering that you would hear at the World Cup, are replaced with tweets and status updates in real time from fan of artists.

emenim is the best rapper in the music business. the fact that he raps about real life situations that everybody has experience with, rather its directly or indirectly. anyone can relate to his songs and he brings alot of emotion to them which effects everybody, negetive or positive.

I honestly didn't care for any of the performances at the grammy's. Most of the performances were very simple and just didn't do anything to stand out and none of them compared to Pink's outstanding grammy performance in 2010. I definitely feel as though the world of music is changing. I used to look forward to seeing live performances but now most of the singers sound horribly live or are lip-singing. I guess if there was one thing that I had to say I liked about the grammy's, it was Cee-Lo's and Gwyneth Paltrow's performance. I love the fact that she's just as good at singing as she is at acting and she put on a good show. Cee-Lo's outfit was so crazy but it added pizzazz to their performance, along with the muppets.

Just watched the Justin Bieber performance. At first he sounded a little shaky. Then it just seemed little he was lip syncing. Couldn't tell. Jaden Smith seemed more convincing. It was ok. Nothing spectacular. Doesn't live up to the hype

Unfortunately I did not catch the Grammy's on TV. But from what I've heard, the relatively unknown Arcade Fire beat out more popular artists such as Eminem and Katy Perry for album of the year. This is quite surprising to me as I've never heard of the group before, but I'm not really a music person so good for them.

While i only caught glimpses of the grammys I do have something I would like to make a bold statement about. The presumptious nature of the top artists and their attitude towards other artists. While it was only a few seconds and a dirty look everyone is talking about justin biebers reaction to not winning best new artist of the year. He looked almost shocked and pissed off but he shouldn't expect this award just because he has armies of kindergarteners and 5th grade girls following his every move. The best new artist should be far reaching into many different genres and have diverse fans. The big name artists need to take a back seat and not act as if the world is owed to them.

On Sunday, I was on my couch watching the entire show. BOLD statement: What the heck is a Nikki Minaj and a Lagy GAGA??? Ok I am aware of their music and do sing along to some of their tunes but I don't understand their urgency to make every appearance a freak show!!! Nikki Minaj arrived in a head to toe leopard suit while Lady Gaga arrived in an egg...yes I said it an EGG! Their circus antics are making a mockery of the very important and professional Grammy's. It is also very distracting and I cannot help but think that it is just to grab attention. It totally makes people ignore their music and not take them seriously as an artist. Next time girls let's try on some gowns.... Marchesa is my personal fave!

I did not catch the grammys but my bold claim is… The band In Fear and Faith did a really good show at the board walk in Orangevale and they are an awesome band. One of their albums had a song about pirates and when they can on stage their props reflected that, and they had smoke machines emitting smoke all over the stage and audience. The smoke went perfectly with their theme and it gave the crowd a lot of energy, which is essential at an underground rock show. Their music performance was also great, their music is basically screaming (which I personally like), and their songs are catchy. In Fear and Faith plays real music with real instruments and they have real talent… unlike probably half the people at the grammys…. Lol. And that is why they are one of my favorite music performances that I have seen.

I didn't catch any part of the grammy's but a bold statement for you: most music now is terrible. If you listen to some of the artist that sing or claim to sing these days its terrible. Artist like Kesha and Lady Gaga disgust me. Listen to some of the lyrics they sing is horrible. The influence they are going to have on our kids is kinda scary. We need more bands like Lifehouse. The lyrics they sing are clean and sometimes inspirational. More music needs to be more positive.

I missed the grammy's because I was hungry and eating food...I wish there was a TV channel that hosts concert tours or music award shows for foreign artists since foreign music is what I mostly listen to. MTV is international but they don't have a foreign MTV channel =(

I watched only part of the Grammys, and I loved Rihanna's and Eminem's performance and Rihanna and Drake's!! However, my favorite part was watching Lady Antebellum win soo many Grammy's!! I absolutely love them and I can say, every one of their songs on their CD is absolutely amazing and relatable!! They definitely deserved to win and have helped branch Country music out to reach many more listeners!

I did watch the Grammy's and I love everything with Pop Culture, so my opinion may be different from others. I love Lady Gaga, i love that she is so eccentric and she just doesn't care. Who else would think I am gonna show up to the Grammy's in an egg? She is very creative and people love her because she is so different. I watch The Grammy's every year and I love that they usually don't pick the artist that everyone thinks. Like this year I assumed Justin Bieber or Drake would win Best New Artist, but Esperanza Spaulding did and no one knew about her. They don't go with what pop culture wants and I like that.

i missed the grammy's i don't watch tv much so i didn't even know it was on. but a claim about the show is that i think the grammys is such an amazing place because its where all the artists come together to receive awards they all have been working hard for.

I did not catch the Grammy's. My Bold statement about music would be that radio ruins music, they over play the new songs and individuals do not want to hear them anymore.
