What the ???????????

What do you call 10 rabbits walking backwards?... A receding hair line. hahahaha....(Cleanjokes.com 2008).

Propositions are alot like a thesis, they set the central idea for a debate or argument and narrow the field. Sometimes they are also called resolutions. In academic debates the proposition is set ahead of time, phrased from the side of the advocate (change agent). Remember, just because you state a proposition such as: "CRC should reimburse argumentation students for parking and books annually" it doesn't mean you agree or disagree, it just sets up the debate parameters and indicates one side will argue "pro" (advocate) while one will take "con" (opposition) and argue to leave things as they are now . So.....review your notes and chapter 3 and then suggest a good proposition for a debate in our class here on the blog. Tell us why your idea is "prima facie" (why at first glance it seems reasonable and interesting). Don't repeat what someone else suggests or zero points for you! Good luck writing your first paper taking a firm position on a controversial topic in 3-5 pages with 2 citations and references due Monday! Smiles--Sandra

There should be no outside class work/homework other than the already extensive reading that is required.

This debate proposition is prima facie because I believe everyone is interested in decreasing their work load outside of class. We learn a lot in class as it is, and anything more than that just further and unecessarily demonstrates our understanding of course material! I'm naturally a "slow" reader, so juggling all this reading with our first paper, other classes, work, and extracurriculars is driving me up a wall! Okay, not really but theres my proposition. =D

The First Amendment should be changed so that it's less liberal.

This proposition is prima facie because many people believe the First Amendment are outdated and needs to be either modified or do away with completely. People are able to say obscene/offensive things without consequences because of the protection that the First Amendment provides. By putting limits on what people can and cannot say, no one will get offended. wheeeeee.

Motorcycle riders should be required to wear protective clothing.
This is prima facie beause it can be argued that people shouldn’t be restricted in what they do and how they chose to transport themselves.
Or it could be argued that helmets aren’t enough and riders need to be required to protect themselves.

Proposition: Pell Grant checks should be disbursed in one check per semester, instead of breaking the payments up into two separate checks for one semester.

This is a great example of prima facie because this argument opens the door to a interesting discussion/debate where both sides of the argument can be presented in a reasonable fashion.

Non citizens should be allowed to vote in the United States.

Prima Facie because they are not allowed to vote, even though they've established permanent residency and are subject to current laws/statutes.

People who have been in the United States for more ten years and haven't committed any felonies should be considered legal U.S. citizens...
This is a prima facie because if people have been livng here for a long period of time , and contributed positivly to society they should be legalized.

The legal drinking age in the United States should be 18 years old.

This is prima facie because college students drink regardless of the law and it is not fair to blame underage drinkers of always committing DUIs. If adult is considered 18 years+ and can be sent away to war, then at least these young adults should be able to have a drink with their parents before they are sent off to serve our country.

Cosumnes River College should have a policy that give discounts on purchases in merchandise at the school's bookstore to students enlisted on the honor's roll.

This is prima facie because because it rewards hard working students and encourages students to do well in their studies. Perhaps an overall GPA improvement of 1.00 to the previous GPA should be identified as honors standings.

Student shouldn't have to pay forthe UTP if they don't take public transportation.

This is prima facie because most students would rather save that money for something that is useful to them.

The bookstore at CRC should give discounts to those students who are taking on a full course load (12 units or more).

This is a prima facie because gives a break to students who are going to school full time and have to buy more books than other students only taking one or two classes. Thus giving those students who are working twice as hard a financial break while in school.

United States Federal Government should increase funds towards embryonic stem cell research.

prema facie bcecause, if we continue to do research on embryonic stem cell research, we can possible help people who are suffering from many diseases that can potentially kill them.

Ferrits should be legal in California because they are so friendly and can be a great substitute for a dog to those who are allergic.

There should be no size limit on pet snakes in California so that instead of a gaurd dog, you can have a gaurd snake!

THE LEGAL AGE FOR DRINKING IN THE UNITED STATES SHOULD NOT BE LOWERED FROM EIGHTEEN TO TWENTY-ONE

MY IDEA IS A PRIMA FACIE BECAUSE DRINKING IS A ACT FOR RESPONSIBLE AND MATURE PEOPLE, AND MAJORITY OF 18 YEAR OLDS ARE NOT PREPARED FOR THE CONSEQUENCES THAT COME FROM DRINKING.

School funding is not equal, and it should be

honestly I brought up this idea for our group and being the odd man out at the time my group mates decided to make ME the opposition to this. So in summary I have to get stuck with aruging against equal oppertunity in a community college setting. I want you all to know this isnt how I think this is just what Im arguing.
